I like shooting and editing video, much of it in my home city of Edinburgh but also elsewhere in Scotland and in other parts of the world when I have been there on holiday. I hope that in the years to come my videos will provide a social history of some of the events. In fact with Covid restrictions in 2020/21 cancelling most live events I added a whole section of vintage videos from a decade back to show how things were before the virus hit us. tinyurl.com/decade-back
Soa Joan Celebrations in Oporto June 2024
The festival of St John is a major celebration in Oporto with various elements happening over 2 days. The first day was merrymaking on the streets with lots of food and drink options. In the afternoon of the second day there was a regatta to sit and watch. In between many participants will have stayed up all night watching midmight fireworks and revelling on till dawn. I admit that with josting crowds I retreated early to my hotel in a quieter part of the city nor did I take part in a dawn swim as was a custom for some.

Aveiro is an attractive town with brightly coloured boats taking tourists on trips on its canal system. It is only a few kilometers from beatiful Atlantic beaches and colourful buildings at Praia Costa da Nova.

Edinburgh Canal Festival, June 2024

An annual community event that is held on the banks of the Union Canal in Edinburgh. There is live music, craft market, community stalls, food and drink and to a cap it all a raft race. This year the raft race was simplified using canoes rather than home made craft. Oslo Botanic Garden & Vigeland Sculpture Park

Two very different public spaces. The Botanic Garden is part of Oslo's Natural History Museum and is desiged as an arboretum with approximately 1800 different species. A Visit to Mount Fløyen, Bergen

Mount Floyen is a hill rising behind the Bryggen harbour area of Bergen. The easiest way to vist it is by the Fløibanen funicular railway. Prepurchasing a ticket can save a long queue. The views from the top are panoramic and there is plenty to explore. The occasional music is Easy Day by Kevin Macleod.

An area of historic wooden warerhouse buildings dating from the 14th to 16th centuries when Bergen was the most northern post in the Hanseatic League's trading empire. Dried codfish from northern Norway were the main exports in exchange for farmed and manufactured goods imported from Germany and other more southern European countries.

As part of the Flying Scotsman Centenary Celbrations the Strathspay Railway hosted a Steam Gala Weekend at the Boat of Garten railway station. The locomotive was static there but under steam. In the yard behind there was a large display of traction engines and steam road rollers with a musical accompanyment provided by an 87-Key Gavioli Organ.

On "museum peninsula" in Oslo there was a collection of over 160 old buildings from all over Norway gathered in a large park. On Sunday Summer afternoons a folk dancing group performs to the music of a traditional 8 sting type of violin.

It was a beatiful morning with a blue sky and a blue sea so what better way to spend it than going out on a boat. There was a very efficient public ferry system using wonderfully smooth and quiet all-electric boats that zipped in and out of the island of Oslo's inner fiord.

This was a day-long multi-part trip based on a package sold by a tour company as "Norway in a Nutshell" but I had booked all my own elements to suit my timing and preferences. I’ve found a Mantis, a stick insect that was unfortunately in a bad state on the pavement but still alive, lots of lizards, some fish and one even came right up to me and my girlfriend while swimming in the sea near Corralejo, lots of birds mostly these grey pigeons, and of course…. Cockroaches and other similar bugs & insects lol. I was amazed to see you found an octopus, I did not know they were here.

Great memories of this light show, when we visited Edinburgh of that yr (& continue to visit each yr at Xmas). This was by far one of my favourite times, fantastic atmosphere and perfect location in the historic Royal Mile. Such a shame they can't bring it back every yr since. They have a small version of it in George St, but it pales in comparison.
This clock is just a gimmick. It shouldn't be in the museum. The organ music is lovely, but it isn't being performed by the clock: it's just a recording.
